It took no less than an hour, maybe more before they could take a break and catch their breaths. They were both sprawled on the floor, skin on skin. Anita finally said, ‘I’ll have carpet burns on my *ss if we continue at this rate.’
Tolu laughed ‘That is one useful *ss babe, it won’t matter at all.’ She giggled and playfully tapped his shoulder ‘You can be so crude! Hmmn… useful eh? How about if I…’
Before she could finish her thought, Tolu steered away from her and helped himself up ‘Ni, I need to get back to this project. I’m off to the shower, would you like to join me?’ He posed the question to her for no more than two seconds before he walked off to shower alone.
Anita was torn between the hurt of being left alone and appreciating his beautiful backside. She lay back down on the carpet. She was craving him already. ‘Ni, you’re in over your head’, she thought before getting up to join him in the shower.
Just as they were done, the bottle if wine was opened up and they both settled down – Tolu was back at his desk working with full concentration while Anita had pulled up a chair beside him though not so close (as he had warned). She alternated between replying text messages and watching him.
She got a call and she hissed. She let the phone ring, silently hoping he would quit but he didn’t. By the sixth time, she picked it up ‘Hello? Hi. Who is this please… Oh, hi… I’m great, how are you?… Mmmn… Err… Oh, yea… I get what you’re saying but I’m not available tonight… I’m out right now and I don’t know when I will be back… No, next week is not good either… Mmmn… maybe in the next two weeks? I’ll let you know… Okay, okay… I said, I will… Goodnight.’ She hissed again and went on with replying texts.
‘Ni…’ Tolu began. ‘Tolu please, don’t…’ It was obvious to her where he was headed. He laughed… all the while focused on his laptop ‘You know I won’t stop. You were being rude to him, Ni… You still do this? You frustrate a guy until he gets tired and he walks away from you and the ones that you manage to bring close, you don’t give them any time or affection whatsoever. Ever since our uni days, Ni. Seriously, what is it? Don’t you want to find someone that’ll love you like you deserve?’
This time, he looked at her. She rolled her eyes. ‘Tolu, I said I didn’t want to talk about it…‘ He shook his head ‘But that’s the thing, we never talk and that’s alright… I just want to know why you try so hard to seem like a bitch to them when you’re not.’ ‘Ahh! Stop pestering me this man. Guys are annoying okay? I just don’t have the time to accomodate any bruised egos…‘ Tolu raised an eyebrow ‘Guys are annoying? Err… Ni. What are you doing here then? Last I checked, I’m a guy as well.’ ‘Obviously! You’re annoying me right now!‘
Tolu laughed ‘You’re trying to avoid answering my questions but I won’t let it slide Ni… not tonight. What is it really?’ She said ‘You want to know? Fine. You know how they say that everyone is looking for something? Maybe I just haven’t found mine yet or maybe he hasn’t come to me… I guess. That’ s all I’m saying, sir. ‘ There was a bit if silence before she jumped up and said ‘Your turn. As far as I remember, you have yet to have a serious relationship. Why is that, Tolu?’ She mimicked his voice and said, ‘What is the problem really?‘
Tolu smiled and gestured to his office ‘All of this. I had to focus to build myself up. No distractions, no time-wasting ventures… but you know what? Maybe I’m beginning to re-consider a few things. Oh… and that’ s all I’m saying too.’ Anita smiled ‘Hmmmn.’ He shook his head ‘I said, maybe ma… maybe.’ and they fell back into companionable silence back to their previous tasks. After a while, Anita got up and strolled out of the office without a word. Tolu lifted up his head and watched her walk out in that gown. Sometimes, he wondered if she knew just how much she had.
He lounged back in his chair and mused over the talk with Anita. Was he really re-considering as he had said? He closed his eyes and thought about it some more. He hadn’t even realized before now that he had been feeling that way. Maybe it was about time, he thought. He sat up and he went back to work.
Meanwhile, standing at the balcony and looking down at the view of what was left of the mainland-island traffic, Anita was lost in similar thoughts: Maybe? What did he mean by maybe? Did he mean her? No, it wasn’t like that… at least, he said it wasn’t like that for them but then, didn’t he say he was re-considering?
She sighed and let go of the the thoughts. She didn’t need any false hopes… Not tonight, Ni. She made another call to the shawarma guy. Why was it taking so long?
