Tolu was telling her about this new show that a friend had mentioned to him when she cut him short.
‘Err… Tolu. Mom left for the east early this morning. In fact, I went with her so I could see her off,’ She said. ‘Really? She’ll be staying for a whole week right?’Amaka nodded. ‘She should be back next week Sunday.’ As soon as she said that, a big infectious smile formed on his face. ‘So, no curfew for the next week then! Cool! Very cool!’ Tolu said; he was clearly enthusiastic for not having to shorten their dates because she needed to get home. After a while, he asked ‘Won’t you be very lonely in that house with her gone? Why not have your cousin come over to stay with you? That way, you’d have some company at home.’
Amaka’s heart began to beat at that very moment. She shook her head at him. ‘No’, she said. ‘No? Why not?’ She was sure that she could hear her heartbeat at this point. ‘Because I won’t be home that much… maybe not at all’, she said nervously. Tolu’s forehead crinkled in concentration. Perhaps, he was confused. ‘Where else would you be if not at home?’ he asked. Amaka paused for a long time searching for the words. Why was it so hard to say it? ‘With you’, she whispered. Tolu kissed her forehead casually as he laughed. ‘Of course you would be with me. What happens at night though when you want to sleep? Would you be comfortable sleeping alone at home?’ Swallowing, Amaka shook her head. ‘No. Tolu, I won’t have to do that because… because I’ll be sleeping with you.’
If she wasn’t watching for his facial expression, she might not have thought that he heard her. She saw something that she couldn’t describe as it passed through his face and somehow, she could identify with it. ‘Are you sure?’ he asked and she nodded. ‘I’m sure… as sure as ever.’
They had both decided that they needed to get back to Amaka’s home so she could lock up and pack up some necessities for her stay with him. That way, he would get to see where she lived, her room and all. He had to admit that he was slightly curious about that aspect of her life. He turned and looked at her… she seemed lost in her own thoughts. Within him, Tolu groaned. Did it mean that he had to endure hours of making out with no form of release or did this mean that she
was ready? He couldn’t really tell for now.
He shrugged. It wasn’t appropriate to ask now. There would be more time for that later. In a few minutes, they were in front of the gate and Amaka explained things just before she got down to open up ‘I had to give Samuel the day off so I could invite you. I’m not sure if he’s one of my mom’s spies looking to ‘catch me in the act’’, she said. As she got down, Tolu followed suit and he moved to open it up with her before driving in. After parking the car, he got a good look at his surroundings and he was thoroughly impressed. He knew it was a mansion but this was far from a shabby mansion built with old money. It was well-maintained for a house that was supposedly built before she was born.
He took his time, insisting that she give him a proper tour of the entire house. After seeing it all, he could understand why Amaka was so sheltered. They had provided as much as they could on the inside so she would have no reason to go out. The last room that she stopped in front of had to be hers. He could tell because she was blushing so much.
‘I’ve never had a guy in here before’, she said… just before she let him in. It was just as organized and as creatively decorated as he expected it to be. The rest of the house was filled with neutral colors but this room was a beautiful mesh of strategically combined colors. It was a lot like his house and he was glad that they had that in common. Getting comfortable, he watched her pull out a packed duffle bag from beneath her bed. Oh, so she had this planned for a while now.
She stood in front of him with her bag. ‘We could leave now’, she said but Tolu had other thoughts. Gently, releasing the bag from her hands, he dropped it unto the carpet and he pulled her toward him until she was close to him. ‘What’s the rush?’ he said. ‘I want to make memories with you in here so anytime you’re in your room, you can remember that I was here.’
