As expected, the conversation with her mother was even more draining than the work that she was doing.
.It was ironic that one snide, sarcastic statement from her mother could put her in the worst of moods no matter how happy she was. Her mother had started with asking her what kind of job she was really doing to making side comments like ‘Only God knows which kind of daughter would ask to sleep over at her office and come back home at 5am.’ She said office like it was a cover for something else.
Amaka shook her head and tried to clear out the thoughts. If she wanted to think about her mother, she would spend the entire night and it would get her nowhere so she went back to work. Back in his office, Tolu was buried in his work. There were a couple of files and contracts that he had to attend to, each one as sensitive as the next. He knew he shouldn’t be bothered but lingering at the back of his mind was the fact that there was a young lady working in the office till 12am.
He couldn’t help but wonder how she planned to get back home that night and how risky it was. He immediately made a call to the security guard on duty. They were not to allow anyone leave the premises without checking in with him first. That way, he could manage the situation. Satisfied with his solution, he went back to work.
An hour later, Amaka was sitting in her office confused. She had tried to get through to Cyril and she couldn’t get through as his number was switched off. She was stuck. She didn’t know what to do from that particular point and all the other guys were not giving her what she needed. After pondering what to do, she immediately made a call through to their supervisor, Dennis. He said he could help her but he needed to be able to see the laptop and see the designs. He asked if she was alone in the office and she replied that the boss was also around. Dennis told her that she was safe. Tolu could handle them properly.
Amaka said her goodbye and cut the call. She sat for a minute wondering what she was going to do… at the same time, she knew she had to go to see him. She picked up the laptop and made her way to his office. On her way over there, she stopped over at the bathroom. Her hair was rough and her face was oily so she walked back to her office ro retrieve her purse and tidy up.
She was in the middle of combing her weave when she stopped. She looked in the mirror ‘Amaka what are you doing? You don’t stand a chance.‘ That didn’t stop her from combing her hair neatly to blotting her face with tissue and retouching her lipstick. When she was done, she dropped the bag off and took her laptop to his office. While passing by a glass door, she thanked her stars that she had worn her fitted black dress. It hugged her curves perfectly.
She reached his office and with her heart beating fast in her chest, she knocked. He answered on the third knock. ‘Yes, come in.‘ She walked in. ‘I’m sorry, sir… Tolu but I need some help with these particular designs.’ He motioned for her to come closer which she did until she dropped her laptop beside him. He looked at it silently for few minutes before he began to make corrections all the while telling her why and teaching her how to. He told her to finish up the next step and return for the others so for the next thirty minutes, she kept going back and forth between their office and his.
To her, it might’ve looked like Tolu was immune but he wasn’t. He noticed how good she smelt, noticed her figure in that dress, noticed her quick mind etc. The next time that she entered, he said to her,‘Why not just pick a chair and sit instead of walking back and forth. That will tire you out quickly and you still have some more to do.‘ She nodded and she found a chair to sit in. They worked together, each one silently doing his own work and secretly stealing glances at each other. Yet none of them had the slightest idea that they were both in the same boat.
