For the umpteenth time, Amaka checked the time. It read 4:01 which was expected since it read 4:00 a minute ago yet she felt that the time was dragging.
She tried to calm herself down but it was really difficult when she was so excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time. With all these feelings running through her, she could barely sit still.
From time to time, she questioned herself and questioned this thing that she was about to do but still, she couldn’t help but think that the time was right.
She nodded to herself. It was time to just let go and trust someone else with her all. She worried if it was too soon to be intimate but when would she get this opportunity again? Her mom was always around and she knew that this one week vacation was one that hadn’t happened for years now and it could take years for her to get that opportunity again. She took a deep breath. It was time to trust Tolu completely. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t see Cyril come in from behind her neither did she see him place his hands over her eyes. Still, that didn’t stop her from knowing who he was.
‘Guess who?’ he said in a very different voice. Rolling her eyes, she gently pulled his hands off ‘Try again, Sir’, she said with a smile. ‘Hi’, he said as he found a place to rest against her desk right in front of her. ‘Are you okay?’ he asked and she immediately nodded. He looked at her critically again then he said ‘Sure?’ ‘Yes’, she said. ‘I’m okay, Cy.’ He looked like he didn’t believe it but he let it go. ‘I’m headed out to get some snacks. Do you want anything?’ Before Amaka could reply, he stopped her. ‘I wonder why I asked. It’s past four and I haven’t seen you eat anything today… Babe, I’m getting something for you.’ With that, he quickly walked away clearly stopping her from saying anything else.
Amaka watched him as he walked away until he disappeared behind the door. He really was a good friend to her even with her inconsistency and he always seemed to notice every little thing about her. How did he know that he hadn’t eaten today? More importantly, how could he always tell that something was wrong? She thought about it for a while before letting it go. Maybe it was just his nature…
Hours later, Amaka was on her way to Tolu’s office after making sure that most people had retired for the night. Fridays were usually the longest wait to see him because people took their time in leaving due to the upcoming weekend. Looking at her time, it was already past 8.
Thankfully, she had worked hard this week to clear her desk. She needed to have ample time for herself… and for Tolu. At the thought of his name, she blushed… as she had been doing all day. Could she really go through with this?
After spending a few seconds trying to build her courage in front of his door, she took a deep breath and she walked in. This night, she was met with the usual smile on his face and as she got closer to him, his hands were outstretched. ‘Hi’, he said before he pulled her towards him and gave her his daily dose of kisses. She didn’t bother to fight it as he rearranged her so she could sit on his legs. As soon as she was comfortable, he began with his daily inquiries. How was her day? What were her challenges? How could he help etc.
With every question, Amaka answered with so much appreciation in her heart for her man. They had this question session every day and every day, Tolu would sit and listen to her carefully as she talked about everything that happened in her day… both grave and minute. She had tested him so many times just to see if he was really listening to her and he had yet to fail the test. In the secret corners of her heart, Amaka whispered a prayer of thanksgiving for this man that was now hers to love… the one that she had searched out for so many years.
