Between The Sheets: All Kinds Of Hard (36)

Amaka settled into his arms again. She needed to be sure that this was really happening because she had only imagined it. Tolu was right beside her, in her room and on her bed, holding her so closely to himself.
He wasn’t saying much and she was okay with just resting her head on his chest and listening to the sound of his breathing. While she was still getting acquainted with this new feeling, she heard a faint snoring sound. It was so faint that she wasn’t sure of it though she found herself looking up. Surprisingly, she found that he had dozed off.

‘Ohh.’ She cooed. He looked so cute in his sleep. She knew she had to wake him up because they couldn’t afford to spend the night under her roof but before then, she spent some time watching him sleep and tracing the corners of his face. When she had watched him to her heart’s content, she kissed him repeatedly on his chin until he woke up. It didn’t take too long for him to regain consciousness and in a few minutes, they were out of the house and on their way to his home. In the car, the mood was casual and jovial between them but every other minute, Amaka would remember what this weekend was bound to bring and shiver in anticipation.

As soon as they got to his place, Tolu picked up her luggage alongside his briefcase and he welcomed her into his home yet again. She was no stranger here so she knew her way around. ‘What do we have for dinner?’, he asked. ‘I feel like we should’ve stopped by to get something because there’s literally nothing in this house except some noodles. You know what Mak, let’s go out for dinner.’ Wanting to savor every minute of this precious time that she had with him, Amaka wasn’t keen on going out. ‘Or, I could just whip up some noodles in few minutes and we’d have that.’

To buttress her point, she walked to the fridge in search of vegetables or meat to cook with. She was faced with an empty fridge holding some fresh vegetables and some sausages. Searching through his cupboards, she also found some baked beans. She settled to begin cooking immediately. It amazed her how Tolu worked around her… cleaning after her and keeping things back in place. By the time her meal was ready, the only dirty pot and spoon were the ones that she was cooking with directly. After they had sat down to devour the meal, Amaka mentioned it to him ‘Tolu, how is it that you were able to finish cleaning up before the meal was done?’

He laughed as he continued eating ‘See, I learnt that the hard way. It was ‘Ni… she couldn’t go to bed until her kitchen was as clean or even cleaner than it was when she began so she would always grab me up to keep her company while she would clean up every nook and cranny. I had to bear watching her clean when all I wanted to do was go to bed. Babe, I had to device a means to save myself from that by cleaning as she cooked. If everything was clean after she cooked then, I wouldn’t have to suffer through an hour of watching her clean and clean. That has been my trick and it always worked with her.’

Her kitchen? Why, her kitchen and why not yours? Amaka wondered nursing so many questions in her mind about his revelation. Before she could stop herself, Amaka asked ‘What about now?’ ‘Now, I’m just used to it’, Tolu said. Seeing that he didn’t see anything to it, Amaka had no choice than to drop the talk.
