Anita strolled into Tolu’s office this particular day as she had in the past. As always, she had sent him a text to make sure of his presence and he had replied. It seemed like everything was normal between them but things had changed.
Instead of a bottle of wine, she held a packet of juice in her hand; instead of indulging in good s3x, she planned that they would munch on the junk that she had bought from the supermarket on her way; instead of wearing next to nothing, she had on her work outfit like any friend would. The thought of being his friend still left a bitter taste in her mouth but it was better than being nothing at all.
After Tolu had pleaded for a couple of minutes to finish up the work on his desk, she decided to settle into one of his sofas and busy herself with some reality tv making sure to choose the sofa opposite Tolu’s corner so she could sneak glances at him. Something was obviously bothering him because he kept swearing at every point in time. Anita watched him flex his muscles unconsciously in anger and she was torn between concern for his worries and the surge of lust that it brought to her being.
When it got to the point where he was crumbling papers in anger, Anita got up and moved to join Tolu at his desk. Gently pulling away any files from him, she placed her hand on his making sure to keep things friendly. ‘What’s the matter? I’ve never seen you react this way except you’re really upset.’
When he tried to turn away from her and make a half-baked excuse, she pulled him back and placed her hand on his shoulder settling herself on his desk so she could look at him ‘Hey. We’re friends, remember? We can actually talk to each other. What’s the matter?’
Tolu looked slightly uncomfortable. ‘Uhh… I’m not sure I should be talking about it with you, Ni.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘Ni asked just before she got what he was trying to say ‘Oh! Amaka right?’ Tolu nodded. At that point, the same sinking feeling passed through her heart. He hadn’t known this girl for two weeks and a mere issue was already affecting him this way. Had she ever affected him at all? ‘Tee, I’m way past all that. Talk to me.’ ‘Okay, I’ll just say it… Ni, I’m s3x starved, I haven’t had s3x in about 3 months. Not since you… Anyways, it never affected me. I mean, I went months when we had our thing going on… But now, things are different.’
‘Oh, God.’ Ni was thinking. The more he spoke, the more he broke her heart. Rather than watch the emotions play out on his face as he spoke about someone else, she busied herself with the papers on the floor. ‘Ni!’ Tolu exclaimed as he watched her slide to the floor. ‘What are you doing? Are you listening?’ She nodded, waving at him to continue. ‘There’s something about her… about us. It’s like a deep need that needs to be quenched. Almost like a hunger that stems from within. I’m not sure I’m explaining it right. Anyways, she’s innocent. I just can’t rush her into this thing. That’s the issue. I need way more, Ni.’
She heard every word and she heard the sincerity that came with them. Picking up the last of the crumbled few, she swallowed and steeled her heart against the hurt before she picked herself up and moved to be a friend.
