Tolu parked his car properly and he sat in his car for a minute. Why was he feeling so conscious of himself and excited to be at the office today?
Usually, Mondays were just another day on the calendar but today, he was so expectant. Why? In no less than a second, his heart gave him a clear answer and he shook his head. No. It couldn’t be. It was too easy. He had only begun to know her so how could she have such effect on him already? He shook out the thoughts, took a deep breath, picked up his suitcase and got out of the car. Business state of mind, man.
Meanwhile, in the design room, a young lady had been looking at the door waiting to see a particular face all morning. For some reason, she couldn’t concentrate on her work today just like she hadn’t been able to concentrate on anything yesterday. Once again, she sighed. After last Friday/Saturday morning, how could she look at him the same way again? He was so sweet and understanding, he didn’t mind being honest and vulnerable with her. She remembered the special moments that they had and she felt the thrill all the way to her toes. If she thought she loved him before, now she was sure that she did. She wondered if that night meant anything to him too.
‘God’, she thought. ‘I wish, I really wish that I’m not alone…’ She was just thinking that when someone jabbed her shoulder with his, invading her thoughts. Cyril ‘Amaka, are you alright? You’ve been too quiet this morning just sitting by yourself. Are you sure that all is well?’ She laughed. ‘Yes, Cyril. All is well. Plus, have I ever been noisy?’ He smiled. ‘You know what I mean naa. You’d usually come around to talk for a while and you haven’t done that this morning. Every time I look over at you, you’re just sitting there by yourself.’ She laughed ‘Cyril, I’m fine. There are just some days when you choose to be by yourself and today…’ In that moment, she lost her train of thought. Tolu was passing by and she tried not to look at him. He didn’t even look in or stop by; he was too busy with his phone. Did that mean anything?
‘Amaka!’ She brought herself back to reality. ‘You see what I’m saying? Where are you, babe?’ She was slightly irritated but she wouldn’t show it. ‘I’m here, Cyril. I was just saying that today is a day when I just want to be alone.’ Cyril nodded. ‘But it’s not because you are upset about something is it?’ She shook her head. She could see that he was torn between staying with her and excusing her to have some alone time. She felt bad for him so she reached out ‘Cyril, how was your weekend? Did you end up going for your cousin’s naming on Sunday?’ He smiled and began to give her low-down and she fought to concentrate.
By 2pm, they had a meeting with the boss, Mr Kunle and his design team. The meeting wasn’t going well because Tolu wasn’t satisfied with what they had done so far. ‘I am disappointed with this. Don’t get me wrong, your designs are great and all but you all are too slow. We should be rounding up today and we’re still barely half-way done. Who did the design for the upcoming fashion show?’ Amaka’s heart began to beat. She did the design alongside the guys but it was assigned to her ‘I did, sir.’ ‘You did?’ She nodded. ‘Why is it not completed?’ ‘Sir?’ ‘You heard me the first time.’ ‘Sir, it’s a finished job. I…’ Tolu said ‘You neglected to put in the logo of the fashion house and you say it’s a finished work?’ If we sent this out, how can anyone tell what it belongs to? It could be a design for anybody anywhere!’ ‘I’m sorry, sir. It was an oversight.’
Tolu flared up ‘An oversight? Do you know how much damage this oversight might’ve caused us? You’re not allowed to make an oversight, madam! You need to understand that the design team is a very sensitive aspect of this office. One little error could go a long way. You know what, I want the entire design re-done with the logo just as it should be. Get it done and show it to me before you leave today.’ Amaka nodded. She was clearly hurt no matter how she tried to hide it and two people in the room saw it – Tolu and Cyril.
